HISTORY

The Salvation Army School for the Blind and Visually Impaired children was founded by Colonel John Barrel and his wife Elizabeth 1927. The institution was established to provide skills training and braille literacy for children and adults who were blind and visually impaired. The institution was first located on King Street in Kingston as the institute for the blind with one female student. The institute was relocated in 1937 to 191/2 Slipen Road in Kingston. The school was renamed The Salvation Army school for the Blind and Visually Impaired Children in 1962. In 1972 the institution was relocated to its current address at 57 Mannings Hill Road. Kingston 8.

At that time administrators and staff worked hard with limited resources to ensure that students were equipped to function in the society. Considerable effort was also made to sensitize the public about the capabilities of the students who were blind. During those years students excel academically with a number of them being integrated into traditional high schools namely in Kingston and Saint Andrew. Students who were integrated were ably supported by volunteers from different clubs and societies and dedicated members of staff. Through the support of the volunteers and members of staff students had the same opportunities as their sighted counterparts in the high schools they attended. Additionally, students competed with the best in the national competitions and triumphed in music dance drama and speech.

In 2007 the HEART TRUST/NTA programs were introduced at the school students were then able to access courses in Food Preparation, Information Technology, Industrial Arts and office administration.

In 2009 the school was reclassified from a primary special education facility to a composite school. The school currently provides Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Vocational students at the institution we’ll all sit national examinations and based on performance some students are integrated into traditional high schools. Those who are not integrated are given an opportunity to pursue secondary and vocational education at the school. At the secondary level they are exposed to a number of subjects up to the Caribbean secondary education certificate (CSEC) level. The subjects are mathematics, English language, social studies, English literature, office administration, religious education, history, Integrated Science, Information Technology, Principles of Business, Home Management and Physical Education. The Vocational areas are Food Preparation, Office Administration, Information Technology, Music and Art and Craft.

School Song

We build our school on thee O Lord; To Thee we bring our common need; The loving heart, the helpful word, the tender thought, the kindly deed: With these, we pray, Thy Spirit may Enrich and bless our school always. We work together in thy sight; We live together in thy love; Guide Thou our faltering steps aright and lift our thoughts to heaven above; Dear Lord, we pray, Thy Spirit may Be present in our school always. Hold Thou each hand, to keep it just; Touch Thou our lips, and make them pure; If Thou art with us, Lord, we must Be faithful friends and comrades sure: Dear Lord, we pray, Thy Spirit may Be present in our school always. We change; but Thou art still the same. The same good Master, Teacher, Friend. We change; but Lord, we bear Thy name, to journey with it to the end And so we pray Thy spirit may Be present in our school always.
